The Christmas party season is upon us and that of course means lots of nights out, parties and fun. It doesn’t have to mean regression in your fitness though.
I’m often asked by clients and random members of the public in bars whether they should still workout when they’re hungover. My answer…YES!
Below are 10 great reasons why you should workout with a hangover.
10 Reasons to workout with a hangover
- Detox – Your body detoxifies in many different ways, two of the most effective pathways being through the skin and mouth, via sweating and breathing. Getting hot and bothered and the heart beating is a great to get the booze out and have you feeling better in a snap.
- Blood flow – Exercise increases blood flow. A hangover headache is partially a restriction of blood flow to the brain. Exercising on a sore head will get blood flowing and help you feel better.
- Energy – When working out, you give a little energy to receive more back in return. The hormonal shift and endorphins released will give you more energy to get you through the working day. Fridays needn’t be a lazy day of procrastination after the night before.
- Tonight! – You’re probably going out again tonight, and you want to look good whilst you’re out socializing, right?
- Commitment – Guess which people turn up at the gym after a big night out? The ones in great shape! Commitment and consistency are the biggest thing you need to attain the body you desire.
- Willpower – When your head is pounding, you feel sick and exhausted the last thing you probably want to do is exercise. However building the resilience at this time increases your willpower and commitment, making you a stronger and ultimately more successful person.
- Routine – The biggest cause of Christmas fitness ills is losing the normal routine. Suddenly you have an over-packed social life and it seems tough to find the time. Maintain the normal routine in-spite of the festive excitement to keep you on track and at your best for the parties.
- Get moving – We all know the feeling of procrastinating on EVERYTHING when hungover. If you make a commitment to the gym it will get your day moving and ensure you don’t lose the whole day to your blanket and bad sitcom re-runs.
- You win January – Everyone is going to be hitting the gym come January anyway. Why set yourself back now? All these other benefits should make this an obvious one, at least maintain where you are now to then kill it in January.
- Pamper – Any excuse to sit in the sauna and steam room will do for me. You’re going to detox and feel better doing so.
So, yes…you should workout with a hangover.
