In her shoes | Claire Galbraith | Senior Surveyor at Deloitte

Careers City Rising Star Claire Galbraith takes some time out of her busy day as a Senior Surveyor at Deloitte, to share with us her career and current role.

I left school at the age of 17 with the aim of studying social sciences at Strathclyde University. Unfortunately, this was not a good choice of degree programme for me and I decided to leave and got a job in the retail sector. After a short stint in retail, I was offered a place on the BT Modern Apprenticeship Scheme within the Health and Safety Department. What I didn’t realise then, was that the knowledge I gained working within BT for 6 years would have such an influence on the role I now perform.

After being made redundant from BT and working within administration roles, I joined Drivers Jonas as an office administrator in 2004. I quickly gained an interest in property management and surveying, and with the support of senior management, I started a day release degree programme and graduated with first class honours in 2010. I am now studying for a NEBOSH qualification which completes the full circle from my BT days.

Tell us a little bit about a day in the life of a Senior Surveyor in Deloitte?
I am a Senior Surveyor within the Asset and Property Management team of Drivers Jonas Deloitte. The role includes offering advice to landlords and tenants, undertaking property management inspections, liaising with insurers, offering advice on lease transactions, implementing pro-active property management techniques, dealing with reactive property management issues and most importantly, ensuring the client’s asset’s are managed diligently and pro-actively.

What did you study?
I studied on day release towards Property Management & Valuation Degree at Caledonian University, Glasgow, and graduated with First Class Honours in July 2010. I have since completed the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence and was elected as a Chartered Surveyor in May 2012. I am currently studying for the National General Certificate in Occupation Health & Safety (NEBOSH) and hope to have gained this qualification by June 2013.

What do you most enjoy about your role?
Two days are never the same working within Asset & Property Management, it is diverse and ever changing. One day I could be providing asset advice on the strategic direction of the client’s property, the next meeting with tenants to discuss their continued occupation and on-going requirements. Whilst in between, managing an issue with overhanging trees encroaching onto a railway line causing a health and safety hazard.

What is great about working at Deloitte?
Employees at Deloitte are first class at what they do. They respect their clients and employees and put them at the heart of all they strive to achieve. The firm invests in their employees and rewards hard work and dedication.

Do you network internally or externally?
Yes, I attend various networking events both internally and externally ranging from lunchtime seminars to evening drinks receptions. RICS Scotland regularly promote networking events and I attend whenever possible.

Work hard, be focussed and most importantly enjoy what you are doing.

Tell us about your own career aspirations?
I’ve never been one to sit and wait for things to happen and will always aspire to do better. The next step will be to achieve my goals and objectives within my Personal Development Plan which will hopefully assist in progression to Assistant Director level.

What advice would I give someone wanting a career in the profession?
Work hard, be focussed and most importantly enjoy what you are doing.
