Acupuncture and herbal medicine in the City of London: fertility, back pain, insomnia

barbican acupuncture logoBarbican Acupuncture is a long-established private acupuncture clinic located within the tranquil surroundings of the Barbican Estate, just off London Wall and only minutes away from Moorgate and St Paul’s.

Although patients visit us for help with many ailments, we specialise in using the traditional treatments of acupuncture and herbal medicine to assist in three main areas:

  • fertility and IVF support
  • back pain and muscular problems
  • insomnia and stress

We are licensed by the City of London Corporation and registered with the NHS, British Acupuncture Council, Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We have also been recommended by City AM newspaper.

As well as addressing specific problems, acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine may also be regularly used in order to assist the body in maintaining good health and wellbeing.

Due to a high demand for our services, we work on an appointments only basis. Please book before arriving in order to avoid disappointment.

Sessions generally involve acupuncture, whereby ultrafine needles are inserted at special locations around the body. The acupuncture points are not always close to the part of the body where you experience a problem, for example, if you suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your arms or legs.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Depending on your condition, a course of individually tailored herbal capsules may be prescribed. These are made from the finest quality, concentrated herbal powders. Herbal prescriptions are normally available for collection or delivery within 24 hours of the consultation.

Auricular acupressure

For some conditions, auricular acupressure may be employed. This involves stimulating special locations on the ears with very small herb-impregnated sticking plasters. The plasters are left in place for three or four days and can be re-stimulated by patients using a gentle squeezing action. Auricular acupressure is particularly useful in reducing cigarette or food cravings and is often used in stop smoking or weight loss programmes.

Cupping involves attaching small glass cups to the skin by means of vacuum pressure. The cups are normally left in place for a few minutes and may help to clear congestion within the body. Cupping is not painful but can leave slightly red, circular patches on the skin. These patches normally disappear after two or three days.

Neuromuscular taping (kinesiotaping)

This technique is a very useful adjunctive therapy, especially for muscular complaints. It involves the taping of muscles with specially elasticated tape that helps facilitate muscular & joint decompression, clearing stagnation and, therefore, speeding recovery in a number of musculoskeletal conditions.

Tuina (Chinese medicinal massage)

For some conditions, tuina (roughly pronounced “tway-nah”) may be employed. Tuina shares origins and similarities with Japanese shiatsu massage, but is much less known about in the West. This form of massage is often useful when looking at muscular conditions.

Electro-acupuncture

This therapy is often used with tendon and muscle problems. It involves the passing of tiny electrical pulses along inserted acupuncture needles. The gentle electrical stimulation penetrates the surrounding tissue and helps clear blockages and pain.

Stop smoking

We have formulated specially designed courses of acupuncture aimed at supporting and assisting the process of giving up smoking. There are over 10 million smokers in the UK and nearly 7 million of them would like to give up. If you would like to quit smoking then our course of acupuncture might be able to help. We aim to bolster your resolve and reduce cravings, thereby assisting your attempt to quit.

Each course consists of four acupuncture sessions (one per week with each session lasting about 40 minutes). Following each acupuncture session you will also receive auricular acupressure.

Weight loss

We have formulated a course aimed at supporting and assisting the process of weight management. In the UK, over 60% of the population are overweight with about 12 million people on a diet at any one time. Click here to see if you are considered to be a healthy weight. If you would like to lose weight then our course may be able to help. We aim to improve digestion, bolster your resolve and reduce cravings, thereby assisting your weight loss efforts.

We offer an eight week course or a twelve week course. Each course consists of one acupuncture session per week (lasting around 40 minutes). Following each acupuncture session you will receive auricular acupressure and be provided with any applicable dietary advice.
