Are your beliefs keeping you in a job or career you hate?

Beliefs are extremely powerful. They have the power to move you closer to your dreams, goals and aspirations as well as the power to keep you from them forever.

To believe means to “to accept the statement or opinion of (a person) as true”. We all hold beliefs about ourselves, about other people and society; in fact you have beliefs about everything.

Your beliefs are what you accept as true and they shape the way you see life, the way you navigate through life and the choices and decisions you make.

If you have been unhappy in your job or career for a while, it is possible that your beliefs are stopping you from making any changes. It could be that you feel someone with your education should be doing a certain type of job in a certain type of company. It could be that you don’t feel you have the skills to do what you really want to do or it could be that people “like you” don’t do jobs “like that”.

Often we are not even aware of our beliefs or how they affect our lives. Answering the following questions will give you a clearer idea of what you believe and how it affects your career as well as other areas of your life:

  • What beliefs do you hold as absolutely true about yourself that are keeping you feeling dissatisfied in your job, career and possibly other areas of your life?
  • What do you say is true about yourself, your job, your friends, family, and society?
  • What do you tell yourself is absolutely impossible?
  • Are you telling yourself that you’re too old, too young, too fat, too thin, too tall, too short or too inexperienced?
  • Are you telling yourself that you lack confidence, time or money?
  • Are you telling yourself that you or someone you know has ‘failed’ before therefore it must be impossible?

A limiting belief is a negative emotion that prevents you from achieving your desired lifestyle and it is vital you eliminate your limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering beliefs that move you closer to your dreams, goals and aspirations.

If you answered yes to any of the last 3 questions above, these are all limiting beliefs that are not serving you.

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

Gail Devers

Make a list of all the things keeping you in your current job and career and include all the things that you believe to be absolutely true about the situation.

Once you have written at least 10 reasons, review each one and ask yourself if it is ABSOLUTELY true. If you believe it to be absolutely true, have a look at what options you have to transform that truth. For example, if you hold the belief “I don’t have enough experience”, look at what you can do to gain the experience.

Remember, just because you believe something, that doesn’t make it true.
