Jobs site Glassdoor have compiled a list of the best places in the UK to live and work, taking into account average salary and job satisfaction.
Slough was crowned the best place to live and work in the UK – ahead of Manchester, Cambridge, Leeds and Oxford.
Jobs site Glassdoor named the commuter town a “prime location” for jobs, affordable living and worker satisfaction, according to a report by BBC News. Glassdoor gave locations across the UK a score for a variety of categories, including employment opportunities, cost of living and job satisfaction.
Slough scored 4.2 out of five, receiving the highest marks due to a ‘good quality of life’ and those living there earning a median salary of £35k a year. The average housing price in Slough is £390,000, a significant drop from London, which sees the average house selling for £500,000.
Glassdoor also took into account it’s location, with strong transport links, being situated close to Heathrow Airport. In addition, over 26,000 jobs were being advertised in and around the area.
Nancy Lalor from the Slough Chamber of Commerce told press that she wasn’t surprised by the results: “We’ve got so many head offices that are based in Slough, so many ‘corporates’, and an amazing trading estate with over 350 businesses on it, so I think it’s really on the up.
“There’s so much new build, so much development going on in the town, every few months the whole look of the town is changing and I think people are inspired by what’s going on.”
Concluding the results, Dr Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist, said Slough offers “an increased quality of life for employees”.
He added: “Although people in London are generally satisfied, it has proven not only to be an expensive place to live, but also an ultra-competitive city in which to find a job.”
