A couple of years ago I had a Big Birthday. When I saw the photos of the party, I wept. Who was that fat, stressed-out woman? She looked nothing like the picture of me I carried in my head (which was at least 25 years and three stone out of date).
This was what I saw:
After ten years of struggling to lose weight, I had become more and more uncomfortable with myself. Nothing worked. Not the endless diets. Not the expensive (and unused) gym membership. Not the growing pile of home exercise equipment (also unused) I kept buying.
That photo was my wake up call.
I realised that if I wanted to change my body, I needed to start by changing my mind. And I needed to stop beating myself up, and learn to accept and support my efforts instead of sabotaging them.
Then cam my a-ha moment:
My body isn’t a bunch of bits I don’t like. It’s my home for the rest of my life – and I can’t move out.
Fast forward two and a half years and so much has changed: my mindset, my career, my prospects – and yes, my body. But three other extraordinary and unexpected benefits had kicked in:
- When I learned to accept my body as ‘home’, I became excited about making it the best home it could be. I started eating more healthily and enjoying food after years of associating it with guilt. And I went from being a committed exercise-phobe to running three times a week – and loving it!
- When my goals became about being healthy and happy, rather than losing weight, the pounds began falling off. I have no idea how much I’ve lost because I never bother with the scales these days, but I’ve dropped two dress sizes and given away most of my old clothes.
- The third amazing thing that happened is that I started to focus on what I wanted. With the negative feelings gone, I had space and energy to think – and think big. I have amazing, mouth-watering goals and I’m achieving them because I’m no longer blocking my own success.
So this is me now.
How did I do it?
My transformation didn’t happen by accident. Using my skills and knowledge as a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist and coach, I developed a systematic process to help me change my mindset and accept myself and my body. And now I want to share that process with you.
