Dining at Christopher’s is a historic experience. Not just because of the delectable cuisine, discreet service and sumptuous surroundings but because the building itself is steeped in a glorious history. Built as a papier maché factory in the first half of the nineteenth century, the current ornate façade was added in 1870, when the site became London’s first licensed casino. Many gentlemen of the early Victorian era would step inside number 18 and gather to choose which horse they thought would triumph in any given race, ‘gambling’ was a vulgar term for oiks and wastrels but the gentlemanly pursuit of ‘gaming’ was a noble hobby. The gaming tables lay at the top of the grand spiral stone staircase where the restaurant is now situated, and legend has it that a bordello could be found on the floors above…
The original Victorian features and the high ceilings have been retained in Christopher’s such that the dining room offers spectacular views of Waterloo Bridge through its impressive tall windows. Although there is no longer a bordello above and gambling is not permitted…we promise you that dining at Christopher’s is an unforgettable experience.
