Dress to impress this Autumn

The summer days are already disappearing, and the nights are slowly getting longer. Yes, it’s nearly autumn and with it, it brings those annoying conundrums of dressing for the cold outside and the warmth of the office, and vice versa.

There are also so many new trends popping up on the high street and catwalks – like 70s revival, patterned dresses, layering.

Don’t despair though, as here at WeAreTheCity we’ve put together some autumn style tips to get you through the season.

Sleeveless Waterfall Cardigan

The sleeveless cardigan is ideal for those first few autumn weeks, when the temperature is still making its mind up. It offers more warmth than just a shirt or top, but is not overpowering for the few sunny days we’ll get in autumn.

Get this one from Topshop which comes in bang-on trend camel or a more subtle grey.

Skater Midi Skirts

Pencil midi skirts have always been a staple in the professional’s wardrobe, so why not mix it up for the season and try a full skater midi skirt. It’s long enough to be office appropriate but also works well in a more casual work environment. Different colours, patterns and fabrics can also take it from the office to dinner.

For a traditional look, try this offering from Mango in a professional black.

Perfect for those in-between days where it’s too sunny to wear trousers but not warm enough to wear a skirt. This can be tricky to pull off – be sure to pair them with a heeled shoe, and a fitted top to avoid looking shapeless, and Invest in a black pair for the office keeping with the classic style.

Shoes, shoes, shoes

Gone are the days that you could risk ballet pumps as acceptable footwear. As the weather worsens, the struggle to find comfortable and waterproof shoes begins again.

For the autumn why not try leather loafers? They are a perfect swap for our summer sandals and ballet pumps! Team them with smart peg trouser and a crisp white, long-sleeved shirt. Tick off the androgynous style and the pegged trouser look all in one outfit. We love this pair by Dune, available at House of Fraser.

If you want to be slightly more adventurous this season, then why not grab yourself a pair of over-the-knee boots. These boots are enjoying a fashion moment and are perfect for those truly dismal days – and they will see you through to winter as well.

Pair these with black tights or leggings and a dress or skirt. For those being very brave, you could pair them with a skater midi skirt! Grab this amazing pair at Office.
