The full potential of women and girls in sport is yet to be unleashed. Women and girls have long been relegated to the sidelines. We must address these
After such a brilliant year in women’s professional sport, there is momentum for change. 2023 saw successes in the Women’s Ashes in cricket, the Rugby Women’s Six Nations, the Women’s Football World Cup and the Netball World Cup. However, stark inequalities remain. 22% fewer girls than boys play team sport. Women and girls are less active than men at every stage of their lives, with the gap widening for ethnic minority communities. Despite growing live popularity and TV viewership, the women’s game continues to lack equal exposure, investment and sponsorship.
Westminster Insight’s Unleashing the Potential of Sport for Women and Girls Conference will spotlight positive action to improve access to physical education for women and girls and drive female participation in sport.
We will examine the Government’s recent School Sport and Activity Plan and the commitment to provide equal access to all school sports and 2 hours of high quality PE per week. With the Government’s new Sport Strategy Get Active published in August 2023, what steps are being taken to increase activity levels, and ensure that women and girls from all communities are benefitting equally?
Chaired by Kim Leadbeater MP, Chair of the APPG for Sport and Anna Thompson, Women’s Sport Lead, BBC, we will hear from a panel of expert speakers including professional female leaders in sport, governing bodies and clubs, government and grassroots organisations. Research suggests that 70% of girls drop out of sport because of sports kit, gender stereotypes or body image concerns. Hear from sector leaders on how we can enable and inspire future generations of girls to participate in sport and tackle the barriers girls face in sport.
Karen Carney’s review of women’s football shed light on the future and opportunities of women’s football in the UK. This conference is perfectly timed to consider her recommendations and the government response this Autumn.
We will address ongoing gender disparities in sports. We will look at how the sector can stamp out stereotyping, misogyny, institutional bias and social inequality in sports.
Join us in Central London to share innovation and insights with colleagues from across the sporting community who are working hard to close the gap and create lasting change.
In-person: This conference will take place at One Birdcage Walk, London. Attend this half-day event in person to network, build relationships and learn from your peers.
