September is the best time to travel! There is a happy medium throughout the world – countries near to the Equator are beginning to cool down to a more bearable temperature; and the Southern Hemisphere is starting to warm up. Prices are plummeting as the school holidays come to an end and there are a number of deals to be had.
So if you can get the time off, why not treat yourself to a little relaxation? We’ve lined up some interesting and special options to get you started.
Wanting to go off the tourist track in Europe? Then why not venture to Munich! Known as country’s second city, Munich is the heart and soul of traditional Germany. The city is compact enough to be walkable, but holds enough architecture and history to keep you entertained and busy. For the sports fans amongst us, a visit to the Bayern Munich grounds or the Olympiapark is a must, or take in the city’s culture on two wheels on a bike tour.
September also coincides with Oktoberfest (19th September to 4th October) – the city’s most famous festival. Why not indulge in steins of beer, dig into traditional cuisine and shop for lederhosen! While many focus on the beer, Oktoberfest has so much more to it – there is a fair, historical tours and car and motorbike shows.
Lake Como, Italy
Many believe that Lake Como is an expensive, luxury paradise, but it offers beautiful surroundings for a surprisingly affordable price. The most obvious activity to do while here is to take to the water, and there are a number of boat and ferry trips to choose from. There are also water-sports such as windsurfing, kite-surfing, sailing and canoeing!
For those looking for a little more relaxation, Lake Como is perfect. Its beaches are picturesque and a perfect way to soak up the sun. There are plenty of bars and eateries, including Michelin starred restaurants in which you can while away the hours.
September really is the best time to visit Santorini! The hordes of summer holiday-makers have disappeared, but the weather is still hot and sunny and the winds have died down. However, hotels are still very busy and booking in advance is widely recommended!
Santorini itself is a volcanic island, with black sand beaches, quaint white buildings and perfectly blue sea. Beautiful architecture is rife in Santorini due to the isle’s volcanic history, and there are a number of walks and museums in which you can soak it all in.
Corsica makes the perfect beach holiday but the region has a lot more variety on offer as well. Corsica has been a part of France for over 200 years, but it is closer to Italy and is very much a Mediterranean island.
Alongside the stunning beaches, there are nature reserves, mountains and forests to explore; museums and architecture steeped in history; and award-winning bars and restaurants – something for everyone.
If you’re looking for something a bit further afield, then Marrakech is the place for you. Nestled in the African nation of Morocco, the region is perfect in September when the temperature dips slightly compared to the summer months.
Marrakech offers so much more than a beach holiday – think bazaars and markets, traditional baths and spas and African cuisine. The city is full of adventure from Yves Saint Laurent’s former garden, Jardin Majorelle, to camel rides across the desert.
