Nadine Hitchon is a Manager in Forensic Accountancy at Deloitte. She is a Chartered Accountant (ACA) and graduated from Cambridge University in 2007. She is a Careers City Rising Star following her being nominated by Deloitte. Nadine works and lives in Manchester.
Tell us a little bit about a day in the life of a Manager in Forensics?
I am a Manager in Deloitte Forensic, part of the global firm Deloitte. Deloitte Forensic works with clients and their legal advisers to undertake investigations and resolve commercial and other disputes. My working days vary a lot depending on the type of project I am engaged on and where that project takes me.
Currently, I am working away from my home office (Manchester) on an accounting investigation at a multinational organisation. Today I held discussions with people with knowledge of the fraud which has taken place, worked with our forensic technology team to arrange a review of electronic data and prepared for a conference call with our client to discuss our progress. Obviously I could say more, but I might have to kill you…
What did you study or what experience did you obtain in order to get in to your current role?
I graduated from Cambridge in 2007 with a degree in Modern Languages and Linguistics. After university, I joined a corporate advisory and restructuring firm where I spent four years working on a range of formal insolvency assignments and studying for my ACA (chartered accountancy) qualification. I moved to Deloitte and into Forensic Accountancy in 2011.
I like the variety of my job – no one project is the same and each brings with it new challenges.
What do you most enjoy about your role?
I like the variety of my job – no one project is the same and each brings with it new challenges. Forensic Accountancy suits me as I can be a bit nosy, and I particularly enjoy the disputes aspect of our work as I like to put together a good written argument. Also, my role sometimes takes me to new places (recently India).
Can you tell us a little bit about what is great about working at Deloitte?
The best thing about Deloitte is that I work with a team of very capable and supportive people.
Do you network either internal or externally?
Internal networking (with other departments in Deloitte) is important for us in Deloitte Forensic, since any of Deloitte’s corporate or individual clients may find themselves in a situation where they require our services. I also network frequently with solicitors and associates at various local law firms and attend events such as those hosted by Promanchester. Networking is an aspect of my role which I enjoy, and which will become more important for me as my career develops.
I’m open minded as to how my professional career develops from here. The main thing is that it continues to keep me interested and challenged.
Tell us about your own career aspirations?
Forensic Accountancy is still relatively new to me, and I’d like to experience a broader range of projects to further develop my skills. I am well placed in Deloitte Forensic to do that. I consider that I am an ambitious person and I can’t help but to plan ahead, but at the same I have learnt that you never know what is round the corner. If you’d have told me 6 years ago that I would be a forensic accountant, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m open minded as to how my professional career develops from here. The main thing is that it continues to keep me interested and challenged.
What advice would you give to someone wanting a career in your profession?
That the work is challenging and interesting. Since we go where the work takes us, the job can be a little unpredictable; you have to be flexible and prepared to travel, often at short notice. The hours can be long, but only when they have to be. On the whole, I would say it is a career which is suited to someone with a busy life in and out of work.
