Today, marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities, an annual observance which aims to promote understanding of disability issues.

First marked in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly, the day also hopes to mobilise support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.

The theme of this year’s day, is ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all”.

The theme ties in with the UN’s 2030 Agenda which pledges to “leave no one behind.” Persons with disabilities can fast track process towards inclusive and sustainable development and promote a resilient society for all, including in the context of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian action, and urban development.

Events to mark the day are taking place across the globe, with the official IDPD celebration taking place at the UN’s headquarters in New York City.

You can raise awareness for the day by holding forums, public discussions and information campaigns in support of IDPD.
