Despite not being an official government employee, Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka has been given an important role in the White House.
According to her attorney, Ivanka has been given an office in the West Wing, classified security clearance and access to government communication devices.
Despite this, she will not receive a salary, or an official title.
Her West Wing office will be situated next to senior adviser Dina Powell, who serves on the National Security Council. Jared Kushner, Ivanka’s husband, is Trump’s senior adviser.
The First Daughter has been prominently involved since Mr Trump’s inauguration, participating in meetings with Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, and Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.
Ivanka’s lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, commented:
“Having an adult child of the president who is actively engaged in the work of the administration is new ground,”
“Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not.”
According to sources, Ms Trump told Politico that she saw nothing unusual with the arrangement. Ivanka has been involved with the Trump organisation for years, worked alongside him for the U.S version of ‘The Apprentice’.
Ivanka Trump still owns her fashion and jewelry brand, but has since stepped down from her position at the company. She is also publishing a book, “Women Who Work,” which is due out this May.
“I will continue to offer my father my candid advice and counsel, as I have for my entire life,” Trump said in a statement.
“While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees.”
