This is an opportunity to build on the success of UK government over past 5 years to play a leading role in driving the transformational change towards end to end service delivery.

This role will be responsible for setting the standards for end to end service design and delivery across the UK government. It will be responsible for supporting transformation across government by:

● Providing resources – by creating and curating design patterns and tools; by publishing up-to-date guidance on the Service Manual; by gathering the data needed to take evidence based service decisions on the Performance Platform and by giving support to build services for everyone through the Accessibility and Assisted Digital team.

● Providing support – through the growth and leadership of user centred design skills and communities; by contributing service design and user research expertise where needed; by advocating for and proving the value of service design and by acting as a central authority to give consistency and cover for service design projects around government.

● Providing structure – by creating cross-departmental service networks that bring together people working on the same user need and by bring together people from policy, delivery, digital and other professions.

The role will be responsible for leading teams to:

● Provide strategic direction to Government on the future of public services

● Building on the Digital Service Standard, develop and/or agree standards, guidance and patterns to meet the needs of cross-government users – using data from the assurance processes to target development of guidance and support to where it will have greatest impact.

● Make it easy for UK government to undertake digital transformation by creating and curating design patterns and tools

● Lead the growth and development of the cross government user centred design function

●vDevelop the Service Manual to continue to be a world leading source of guidance for digital development.

● Develop the Performance Platform to continue to be a world leading source of information on government service performance, enabling users to make better decisions about service improvement

● Ensure all users can access all government services by providing strategic advice and support on Accessibility, assisted digital and offline channels

● Be responsible for publication of all guidance produced by GDS/the digital function

● Be responsible for EU and other international engagement on service design and standards.

● Be an active member of the Service Design and Assurance Senior Management Team, and part of the SCS leadership of GDS.

Leave allowances
25 days’ paid leave per annum rising to 30 days after five years’ service. In addition, full-time staff receive eight public holidays and the Queen’s Birthday privilege day as well as competitive maternity leave, parental leave and adoption leave.
