Join our ‘coat walk’ ǀ Find your perfect winter warmer

October is here and so too is the time of year when it’s no longer acceptable (or possible) to embrace the outside in just a jacket. With rainy and breezy days and chilly nights to contend with, we need a coat that will not only provide warmth and keep us dry, but will also look super stylish at the same time.

And that is where WATC comes in – we’ve done our research and discovered this season’s hottest trends that will not only get you through the winter months, but will also be perfect right until spring.

Duster coats

Duster coats have made a return from the roaring 20s. These masculine coats look effortlessly stylish and will go with any outfit. They are loose fitting so will suit any body type and usually have no fiddly buttons.

Try this cashmere blend option from Topshop, which comes in a bang-on trend camel colour. Dress it down by wearing it closed with jeans and heels, or keep it smart, wearing it open with a shift dress.

Trench Coat

The trench coat was originally made for Army officers, and adapted for use in the trenches during the First World War (hence the name). Classic versions of the coat are waterproof and come in a khaki colour. They normally fastened using buttons and have a belt to create a more fitted look.

Much like the duster coat it gives a masculine feel and look, so if you wanted something a bit more feminine, opt for a dusky pink or pale blue colour. This Monki coat is double breasted, lightweight and soft to the touch, but will keep you dry in those autumn downpours. You could also get fully into the 70s trend and pair it with a denim skirt or suede accessories.

Not just reserved for people with motorbikes anymore, the humble leather jacket has become a solid staple in many a wardrobe. Perfect for the earlier autumn months or those dry winter days, the leather jacket is a perfect cover up when it gets a bit chilly.

Mix it up with a grey, tan or suede varieties and team with casual jeans or toughen up a little black dress. For those feeling brave you can buy this Ted Baker jacket in purple. The wide collar draws the eye in and the gold zip detailing compliment the colour, making the jacket pop. This is also available in a baby blue colour.

Capes are a big thing this year, hitting both the catwalk and the high street. They are great for wrapping around you and bracing the cool October breeze.

Capes are the perfect investment piece and can easily transform any outfit. They come in a range of styles from extra cosy to boho chic to smart cover-ups.

We love this Reiss cape in black which will take you from the office to dinner. This cape’s wool blend will keep you snug throughout the winter, and the concealed buttons and exaggerated pockets give it a sleek look. Pair it with a smart suit during the working day then add bold and colourful accessories for the evening.
