New Zealand’s government calls for women to join State Owned Enterprise boards

New Zealand’s government has called for women to apply for roles on several State Owned Enterprise boards.

New Zealand Flag (F)Women with skills in governance, management, company law and financial matters are being encouraged to join the boards of Airways Ltd, AsureQuality Ltd, Meteorological Service of New Zealand Ltd and Quotable Value New Zealand Ltd.

State Owned Enterprises Minister Todd McClay made the announcement and said he is looking for high caliber individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly women.

Minister for Women Louise Upston said: “Mr McClay and I are committed to increasing the percentage of women on State Owned Enterprises boards to at least 45 percent.”

In May she noted that women only amounted to 43.4% on state sector boards and committees. She also challenged the private sector to work on its figure of only 17%.

In May this year Upston said the percentage of women on state sector boards and committees was 43.4 percent.
