Have you paid it forward and nominated an amazing woman for our 2018 Rising Star awards?

Now in its fourth year, the Rising Stars Awards are the first to focus on the UK’s female talent pipeline below management level. Through these awards, we will celebrate 100 individual female contributors that represent the leaders and role models of ‪tomorrow. We hope that by raising the profile of our shortlist and winners, we will also encourage organisations to consider how they strengthen the development of their female pipeline in the future.

Recognising that careers for women may follow different timescales, the Top 100 Rising Stars Awards will not have any age restrictions included within the criteria. WeAreTheCity feels it has a responsibility to ensure that female talent, regardless of age and background, receives the necessary support and skills to transition into key decision-making roles within our organisations.


What happened next for one of our previous winners?

Carla Mazzaccherini is Vice President, Vulnerability Management at Morgan Stanley. In 2017, she won our Rising Star in Fintech award. Here she tells us what happened after winning the award:

What has happened in your careers since winning the Rising Star awards?

2017 was a huge year for me in my career, I had set myself the goal of promotion and that meant a lot of hard work.  I was hugely flattered to be nominated and did not imagine for a minute it would go any further.  I was very surprised when I was shortlisted and subsequently a winner in the FinTech category.  The support and goodwill from my colleagues and friends was fantastic.  My success at both being shortlisted and then as a winner was featured on my own department website but also company-wide on the Intranet.  I featured in the newsletter of our Women’s Business Alliance and was part of a winning team in the Giving Back category for running Code Clubs in the south-side of Glasgow.  The WeAreTheCity ‘experience’ was a huge boost to my confidence and I grew in my role as a result, which really helped me to take on more leadership within my team and ultimately I was promoted.  As well as being promoted, my remit and responsibilities have grown, I have taken over the team I was previously a part of and am running a global program of work.  I’m also still actively involved in being a STEM Ambassador and running Introduction to Coding days, but have also recently become a mentor to a young woman in our Technology department.

Please tell us what your advice would be for anyone looking to progress in their careers?  Please provide 3 top tips.

  • Don’t let your inner voice derail you from your dreams or ambitions
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert at whatever you excel at
  • Give your word and deliver on it, you’ll build relationships and a reputation as someone who can be trusted to get things done

WeAreTheCity will use its extensive reach across the UK & Ireland to find 100 high-achieving women across 20 key industries and professions.

Alongside our Rising Stars categories, we are also calling for nominations for Champions and a Company of the Year. Our Champion award recognises the achievements of five senior individuals, male or female, who are actively supporting the female pipeline outside of their day job. Nominations for this award are individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to gender, e.g. HeForShe supporters, Network Leaders, Directors, MD’s or C-Suite individuals who are championing women either inside or outside their organisations.

The Company of the Year award recognises the achievements of a company who can clearly demonstrate that they are actively supporting its female talent pipeline through their initiatives, training, development programmes and internal employee relations and diversity network groups.

A shortlist of ten women from each industry category will be chosen by an esteemed panel of judges and will be published in May. The shortlist will then be open to a public vote. Judging for the final five winners for each category will take place with independent judges across May and June. The Top 100 Rising Stars will be announced towards the end of June and all winners, sponsors and supporters will be invited to attend a prestigious evening reception, hosted by The Times & The Sunday Times in London, to celebrate and collect their awards.

*There is no public vote of support for the Champion of the Year or Company of the Year award
