SBPWA – Singapore Business & Professional Women Association

Our SBPWA story began in 1972 when a group of Singapore Business & Professional Women came together to form an association with affiliation to Business and Professional Women (BPW) International (www.bpw-international.org) to help working women in Singapore to advance their careers and professions. This association was named “SBPWA” which stands for Singapore Business & Professional Women’s Association. SBPWA’s main goal then was to concentrate on improving the skills of our members and get them to recognize their potential and the importance of their role in Singapore society.

In the 1980s, when the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation (SCWO http://www.scwo.org.sg) was established as the national coordinating body of women’s organisations in Singapore, and the non-governmental representative on the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW), SBPWA became an active member. This has enabled our members to grow and further expand their network not only in Singapore, but in the ASEAN region.

In the mid 90s, SBPWA decided to adopt BPW International’s theme of strategic global partnerships and to include partnerships with other women’s clubs in Singapore as well as those from other countries to give our members wider exposure in the business and professional arenas. This is to prepare our members to go global.
From 2001, SBPWA joined hands with two other BPW Singapore chapters to form the Federation of BPW Singapore. This raised our status at BPW International and gave us the right to vote at BPW International Congresses.. BPW International has presence in more than 100 countries around the world This move has enabled our members to more actively in BPW International’s initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of women in a rapidly changing environment for business and the professions. SBPWA has grown tremendously since its conception with our member as the main beneficiary. With every stage of growth we made, our members grew even stronger in their business and professional networks. We have also not forgotten our obligation to society. In order to help young women pursue post secondary education, SBPWA has an educational fund where we put aside money every year to help young female students to pursue further education beyond secondary school.
