Tennis star Serena Williams has praised her mother for being “one of the strongest women” she’s ever known in an open letter.
Speaking on Reddit earlier in the week, a site which was co-founded by her fiancé Alexis Ohanian – the athlete published an emotional open letter to her mother.
Addressing her mother, Oracene Price, Williams said: “You are one of the strongest women I know. I was looking at my daughter (Oh my God, yes, I have a daughter) and she has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body.”
Williams continued to explain how growing up in the media spotlight has led to scrutiny of career choices and physical appearance, praising her mother for remaining so resilient during all of the abusive comments.
“I don’t know how I would react if [my baby] has to go through what I’ve gone through since I was a 15-year-old and even to this day,” said Williams.
“I’ve been called a man because I appeared outwardly strong.”
Williams then proceeded to applaud her mother for remaining calm against racism and those who “too ignorant to understand the power of a black woman”.
She celebrated that not all women are the same: “I am proud we were able to show them what some women look like. We don’t all look the same. We are curvy, strong, muscular, tall, small, just to name a few, and all the same: we are women and proud!”
She concluded the letter by thanking her mother.
“Thank you for being the role model I needed to endure all the hardships that I now regard as a challenges – ones that I enjoy. I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had.”
