Style Spotlight: Dress like a Sailor

Mother may have said not to talk like a sailor, but she never said anything about dressing like one! A sailor inspired look can be worn throughout the summer to create a cool & refreshing look when the weather really heats up.

When it comes to this style, it’s all about pairing. It’s easy to get carried away and overdo it, but that’s not what you want! You want to create an effortless ensemble that gives hints of the ocean breeze and sailing the seven seas. To create a boat-worthy sailor outfit go for navy, red, and white colors. Bold prints featuring anchors or stars also give off sailor sass that’s easy to find in shorts and shirts. Keep your feet stylish in sandals or flats, and top off the look with a sun hat to complete your outfit. Check out some of my favorite sailor inspired items below:

1. Play with prints

Don’t be afraid to get crazy with prints when putting your sailor ensemble together. Just make sure your other garments are neutral when playing with bold prints so that you have just the right amount. If all you want to rock is prints then go for this Hooked on Haute Dress from ModCloth.com. The navy blue dress features anchor prints in white and is a fast and easy way to add sailor inspiration to your look.

Fashion-sailor2. Nothing says sailor like stripes

Have fun with stripes! A sailor look wouldn’t be complete without the fun design. My favorite way to wear stripes is on shorts because too much stripes can be a distraction. Shorts offer just the right amount of stripes to your sailor garb. My latest stripe obsession have been these high waisted Vintage Circus Shorts from ZooShoo.com. These shorts are super stylish and great paired with boat shoes and a blouse. The navy stripes and cutout triangles at the hem are an interesting combination that you’ll absolutely love.

3. The perfect pair of white pants

When shopping for a pair of white pants you want to find a pair that can be worn all season long and with just about anything. What I like to look for in my white pants is that they are high waisted and wide-legged, which give off a refreshingly cool and edgy look. The Effortless Wide-Leg Pants from Forever21 are stylishly chic and perfect for completing your spring and summer sailor outfit. The lightweight pants can be paired with a navy blouse and nautical jewelry. Finish the look with your favorite pair of wedges, shades, sun hat, and voila—you’re ready to set sail!

4. Nautical Accents

Jewelry is a great way to add a subtle touch of sparkle to your sailor inspired outfit. Simply pair your favorite nautical jewelry with a pair of white pants and navy blouse to create a look that says ships ahoy! When going for symbolic sailor jewelry, I recommend staying away from prints with similar designs. You don’t want to overdo your look with too much nautical accents. My pick for a great sailor inspired piece is Sirena’s Gold Anchor Necklace from Emitations.com, I think it’s a great dainty piece that screams sailor—not to mention the price is great for those on a budget. If earrings or rings are more your style, be sure to look at the other nautical pieces they offer, which are just as inexpensive and totally ship-shape chic!

Fashion-sailor15. Bright Boat Shoes

A pair of boat shoes is a definite must-have for creating your sailor inspired ensemble. Nothing says sailor more than a pair of the right boat shoes. I love to wear boat shoes with a pair of shorts, but they can definitely be paired with white pants too. I love these striped mint boat shoes by ROCK & CANDY from FamousFootwear.com because they’re brightly colored, creating a pop of color that’ll add a unique take to your overall look. Boat shoes are classic and can be worn all season long, plus if it’s the only sailor themed piece you wear, you’ll still give off a nautical appearance.Fashion-sailor2

6. Sun hat for sunny days

Top your sailor style with a sun hat for those warm sunny spring and summer days. A sun hat is perfect for bad hair days or just wearing when you want to protect you face from the sun. You’ll love the By The Sea Hat by Roxy for its bright white color and large design. Wear it with any of my sailor style recommendations and really embody the sailor look in a modern way.

7. A blouse to blow in the wind with

Fashion-sailor3The right blouse will give your look an exhilarating touch that will make your look ready to set sail. I love this affordable cute Sleeveless Blouse by H&M. It’s stripped, which is a must for creating a nautical inspired outfit. Plus it has a v-neck, so it’s perfect to pair with my nautical accent jewelry recommendation. It will look great with my pick for white pants too! I’d stay away from pairing with other striped garments though, so your look doesn’t become a distraction or look distasteful with all the stripes you have going on. Top of this blouse with my sun hat and you’ll look amazing from sea to shining sea!

These are just what I recommend as essentials to creating your sailor look. Of course, there’s plenty of fish in the sea—or styles I should say! So, mix and match these items with pieces already in your closet to create this classic, warm weather look.
