Role of the week: IT Systems Administrator | London

The Francis Crick Institute are looking for 2 Systems Administrators who will be part of the Core Systems Team and report to the Core Systems Team Lead.

They will work with the wider IT&S operational and programme team, including external suppliers. In addition, the post will work with stakeholders from a variety of levels across the organisation.
This role will be responsible for delivering multiple components of the Core IT operational services provided by the Core Systems Team, under the guidance of one or more Senior Systems Administrators.

The Systems Administrator will be part of the Core Systems Team and report to the Core Systems Team Lead. They will work with the wider IT&S operational and programme team, including external suppliers. In addition, the post will work with stakeholders from a variety of levels across the organisation.
This role will be responsible for delivering multiple components of the Core IT operational services  provided by the Core Systems Team, under the guidance of one or more Senior Systems Administrators.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Core Systems Team are responsible for a range of IT infrastructure service areas, some examples of which are:
•    Identity Management and Authentication Services
•    Network Infrastructure Services
•    Virtualisation and Server Platform Services
•    Collaboration and Enterprise Application Services
•    Storage, Backup and Archiving Services

The System Administrator role will be responsible for managing components of one or more service areas, taking responsibility for implementation and operation of any associated technologies. They will advise and report regularly to the Senior Systems Administrators and Core Systems Team Lead and work with the wider IT&S team as appropriate to organise, plan, implement and maintain services.

Specific objectives include, but are not limited to the following:
•    Responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of central infrastructure service components and other more specialised systems, which may be delivered through physical hardware, onsite virtual infrastructure or cloud based services.
•    Work collaboratively across teams and departments to increase understanding of service needs of the organisation and to determine the detailed technologies (hardware, software and any relevant integration with other systems/services) for institute operation.
•    Follow institute policies and procedures; including incident and problem management, appropriate change controls and team standard operating procedures and document any team or work specific considerations for adhering to these.
•    Responsible for daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, support ticket queues and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups as part of a team rota.
•    Problem diagnosis, resolution and reporting which may involve working with staff in other teams and departments as well as and external suppliers and support agencies.
•    Identify and write new documentation of standards operating procedures and other supporting documentation for inclusion in the departmental knowledgebase.
•    Help identify and implement recommended measures to ensure that the security of all IT systems  is maintained. This may involve liaising with and obtaining advice from the Information Security Committee as well as external security specialists.
•    Seek innovative ways to simplify and where possible automate system administration tasks.
•    Keep up to date with software and hardware developments relevant to the role.

KEY EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

  • Educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant technical training.
  • Operational experience including multi-platform (Windows and Linux) server administration and network/web/database expertise.
  • Systems administration experience of enterprise server environments based on VMware including set up of servers and storage (e.g. Cisco UCS and EMC VNX), configuration of Windows and Linux server OS and management of backups.
  • Knowledge of creating, maintaining and troubleshooting rapid development of custom scripts in languages such as PowerShell, Perl and Python, including the use of team source repositories.
  • Experience of successfully automating system administration tasks through use of locally- developed scripts and/or integration with system administration tools
  • Previous experience of providing expert assistance and a high level of customer service to others in their use of IT resources.
  • Previous experience of effectively maintaining and developing IT documentation.
  • A demonstrable ability to balance multiple priorities and operate comfortably in an environment that is developing as the organisation matures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrable ability to build effective relationships at all levels.
  • A self-starter, with a proven track record of working effectively in a collegiate environment without close supervision.
  • A proven ability to demonstrate an appreciation for the operational needs of a scientific research environment is essential; previous experience of working in such an environment would be an advantage.
  • Evidence of further continuous professional development activities, and the intellect to grasp the unusual issues arising from the nature of the project (particularly driven by the specialised scientific facilities).
  • A proven track record of carrying out agreed operational procedures of a routine nature

o    Virtualisation technologies (VMware vSphere)
o    Storage vendors (EMC, DDN, Nexsan), technologies (FibreChannel, iSCSI, GPFS) and filesharing (SMB, NFS)
o    High availability, load balancing, web proxies
o    Monitoring and alerting (Solarwinds)
o    Disaster recovery and backup (including tape systems, CommVault, Spectrum Protect)
o    Archiving
o    System hardening, security and password/key/certification management
o    Scripting (Shell, Python, Perl, PowerShell)
o    Desktop build systems (Dell Kace, JAMF Casper)
o    Data centre technologies, operation and management tools (Struxureware, Geist Racknet)
o    Automation and orchestration (UCS Director, Ansible, CFengine, Puppet)
o    Backup and data replication (Zerto, Veeam, EMC Data Domain)
o    Appreciation of supporting a DevOps approach
o    Understanding of Public and Private Cloud computing – AWS, Azure, OpenStack, etc
o    Good understanding of networking (TCP/IP) in relation to virtualisation (VMware NSX and Cisco 1000v)
o    Server OS Patching using centralised management tools (WSUS, Spacewalk)
o    Licensing management
o    Experience of a mixed client estate (Windows, Mac, Linux)
o    Penetration testing
o    IPAM systems including DHCP/DNS.
o    Supporting development stacks (e.g. LAMP) across production and staging environments.
o    Working with a mix of COTS and Open source technologies
