Take part in Girls’ Football Week ǀ 5th – 11th October

women playing footballThe Football Association (FA) are launching Girls’ Football Week, which aims to encourage schools, universities and other education facilities to hold more female-focused football sessions.

The success of the English team during the Women’s World Cup and the launch of the FA’s #WeCanPlay campaign have already begun to encourage many females to pick up to sport. Now the sporting association is hoping to attract girls in primary and secondary education, as well as at a college and university level.

Running from 5th to 11th October, the week comes at a time when women’s football is enjoying a boost in popularity and media attention. The initiative follows on from earlier successful campaigns like Women’s Football Week which began in 2012 and focused on promoting women’s football in Further Education. The FA is hoping to replicate this success and attract over 5,000 girls and women to play football during the week.

Polly Fildes, FA women’s football national project manager, said of the scheme, “This year has seen real change and momentum in women’s football, especially with the success of the Lionesses at this summer’s World Cup, and we wanted to build on that by extending the programme.”

She continues, “We want as many schools, colleges and universities to provide opportunities for their female students to play football during the national week of action and we have created the tools and materials provided to make it as easy as possible for them to do so.”

Alex Scott, the England and Arsenal defender, said, “Anything that gives people the opportunity and confidence to try football is really important. As England players, we are always happy to see girls taking part in football and want to use our platform to inspire more people to play.”

Across the country, schools, clubs and sporting groups are holding female centric events, and the FA is providing free-to-use promotional resources for any institutions that are taking part. For more information and to find out about holding your own event, please click here.
