The Alchemy of Style

words and photographs by Sharon Simpson

You know that friend you have, the one that always rocks something totally different and entirely covetable? An unusual piece of jewellery, a one off dress or a to die for pair of shoes. Soon as you set eyes on what she’s wearing you have to know where it’s from. But when you ask her, damn, she’s tight lipped. Expecting full disclosure of her source you find that she’s cryptic, vague, monosyllabic, even downright evasive. She’s got a secret and she’s not sharing.

Well, I have a secret, a new discovery but unlike that friend I’m prepared to share. Lean in a little closer… (Whispers) Soboye Boutique.

It is the most visually enticing, sensory indulgent, girl friendly lifestyle emporium one could wish for.

My eyes are drawn hungrily around the shop and like a small child I want everything I touch. Feeling the softness of Heidi Mottram’s Chance Eel Skin leather clutch bag I let out a small sigh. Maud Villaret’s stunning handmade statement neckpiece hangs gloriously next to bright, simple silk dresses which scream sunshine and cocktails. Beautifully patterned cushions designed by Samson tell their own story of life in exotic locations.

Samson Soboye is many things: proprietor, visionary, fashion stylist, art director and creative entrepreneur. He says,

“I didn’t want to be pigeonholed for just doing fur cushions which is what I’m known for. I want my shop to present the complete picture of what I’m about.”

I imagine he’s the kind of friend that when you’re all rummaging around an antique store he’s the one that finds something everyone wants. His boutique invites you to indulge in a little of what he likes.

The shop has a playful feel, the walls lined with colourful Ghana football dolls, made to commemorate the 2010 Fifa World Cup (you can win one, see our competition).

Samson has styled for The Guardian, Es Magazine, The Independent, Wound, The Sunday Express, The Saturday Times Magazine, Valerie Campbell (Naomi’s mum), Katie Derham news/broadcaster and Melanie Sykes who recently married her Twitter sweetheart.

His 2 year creative sabbatical from banking took him to Australia. There he worked as a curator for an Aboriginal Art Gallery, designed his first ever men’s wear range for Juli Teal, and helped to run a fashion store. The change changed his mind about his future. He said,

“I thought there had to be more to life than adding figures and rejigging numbers. So, I applied to Central St Martin’s to do the Fashion and Communication course and was one of only 7 people accepted.”

Four intense years later he landed an internship at British Vogue, and became the mentee of fashion director Lucinda Chambers.

“Most people who are there spend a year just cleaning out the clothes cupboard, doing menial work, I was taken on shoots from the beginning.”

Clearly Ms Chamber’s had made an exciting discovery, now so can you.
