In either of these cases, applying for a job can be a bit tricky. In order to put your best foot forward and to increase the chances of walking away a winner, it is important to embrace a few tips and tricks. Let us take a closer look at the application process.

Be Realistic and Honest

Before entering into the competitive world of the job applicant, be honest with yourself in regards to what you hope to achieve. Take into account factors such as:

  • The ability to earn more money.
  • Telecommuting possibilities.
  • A greater sense of professional flexibility.
  • Room for upward mobility over time.

Which variables are the most important to you? Having a clear roadmap will enable you to narrow down your choices and to point your efforts in the right direction.

Polish Your CV

You can think of a CV as your personal “billboard” which highlights all of your skills and expertise. In many cases, this is the first point of contact between an applicant and an employer. So, be sure that it is up to date. Avoid keyword stuffing or using phrases such “highly motivated” or “team player”, as these are simply too generic. Focus upon your skills, your background and what you can offer the specific company in question. It is also a great idea to purchase a bundle of cheap envelopes, as these can be personalised to add an extra sense of flair to the overall presentation.

The Piecemeal Approach

Many active jobseekers become overwhelmed with the process from the very beginning. This often arises from the fact that they try to tackle too many tasks simultaneously. This can be dangerous for two reasons. First, you may very well overlook a position which could have been perfect for your requirements. Secondly, the prospective employer could begin to feel that you are not organised or that you do not care about the position in question. As opposed to attempting to take on the world, be patient and do not rush through the finer points.

The Interview

Most applicants will be asked to participate in an interview. It is therefore very important to come prepared. Dress as would be appropriate for day-to-day operations at the company itself. If it is a suit job, where a suit, if not then be casual but still smart. Always bring along a copy of your CV, as the interviewer may request it on occasion. Be brief and to the point as opposed to dominating the conversation. Finally, think of between three to five important questions to ask the employer. Not only will this help to address any unclear issues, but it will show the firm that you are serious about landing the role.

Encountering the perfect job may be a bit challenging, but these tips can help to streamline the process. Your dream position could indeed be closer than you think!
