GiveOut is a new charity that will raise funds for global LGBTQI causes.
Their purpose is to resource activists working for the freedom to be and to do in the countries where being LGBTQI remains illegal or repressed. They expect to offer donors the opportunity to fund a portfolio of causes focused on core funding of activist-led country and regional organisations, and international programming NGOs.
They aim to engage new donors to give to the global LGBTQI movement, having positive impact and sustainably raising >£1m/year within 5 years. Our intent is to develop a model that works in the UK and scale it to other countries in Europe. We are in the process of registering with the UK charity commission and are currently recruiting an Executive Director.
Profile of trustees we are seeking
They now need to recruit a diverse and talented set of Trustees to help bring this new organisation into the world, provide governance and oversight and guide its strategic development. The Trustees will meet formally 3-4 times per year in person with potential to consider virtual attendees in the case of specific geographic challenges. In addition there are likely to be monthly meetings by phone to discuss specific topics.
They are looking for a diverse group of individuals and in particular we will prioritise demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Law, especially human rights law or as it relates to charity governance
- Experience as a human rights defender, especially in an LGBTQI context
- Accounting, especially in a non-profit setting
- Fundraising, especially with high net worth individuals
- International grant-making and monitoring/evaluation in a foundation or non-profit setting
- Launching or growing a digital business or non-profit
- PR/social media
- Previous board experience
Trustees are responsible for the governance and oversight of the organisation’s operations, as well as working with the Executive Director to set its strategic direction. As a fundraising and grant-making charity, GiveOut’s Trustees are expected to take an active role in supporting these activities in particular. GiveOut is based in London with plans to expand to other western European cities over time.
In general, Trustees would be expected to travel at their own cost to meetings in London 3-4 times per year. However, exceptions may be made to allow virtual participation by people with exceptional profiles, particularly experienced activists from the global South.
