Young women leadership and how to improve it

Today the very concept of being a leader is changing. Previously it was about hierarchical, controlling activity, while now it is collaborative and facilitative. It is not about the position, but about relationships, creativity, and influence. The new understanding of the leadership gives new opportunities for women leaders.

Today’s situation:

A young woman today is educated and ambitious and ready to compete for leadership positions. However, she has to face not only her male (and female) rivals but also the remaining inner and societal barriers. There are still a majority of men at the top of the leadership level in a lot of large companies. At the start of her career, a young woman still lacks the support and confidence of colleagues, especially in traditional “male” professions, like maths, technology, science and engineering. Young women also often lack the appropriate role models and should develop some core competencies to ensure her own success.

But how do we encourage more young women to accept the challenges and aim to become a leader? In America, amongst other countries, Young Women’s Leadership schools have been introduced to help improve the lack of women in leadership positions.

Young Women’s Leadership (YWL) schools:

YWL schools are all-girls public and private schools aim to help girls:

  • to realise and develop their leadership potential
  • to provide them with high-quality preparatory education to enhance them to graduate high school and continue higher education, to increase their academic success
  • to provide the models to develop socially and personally
  • to increase their opportunities as leaders.

Often science, maths, and technology subjects are emphasised, but young women need help across all areas. Young Women Leadership schools help students to choose a college, prepare for tests, applications, and interviews as well as essay help.

The schools support girls from low-income families and often it is one of the school objectives to provide financial aid to enable education for these students.

The YWL schools are really helping girls set and achieve goals for their life and develop leadership skills.

The proof:

For example, YWL Charter School of Chicago gives its’ graduates feedback. Amongst their success is a homeless girl who managed to struggle through the past and prepare so well she was accepted into ten colleges and now studies pharmacy. Another graduate led a robotic engineering team in robotic building competition.

The YWL Network claims their graduates achieve four-year degrees at colleges at a rate of 400 per cent compared to their peers. They have helped more than ten thousand students to enroll into colleges, and for low-income students, it provided financial aid of more than $300 million.
