Your Autumn-Winter guide to all things stylish

August is a funny old month in the world of retail. Its a cross between ‘well handled’ remnants left over from the summer sales interspersed with the arrival of new garments for   the Autumn season: And all this while the sun is out making it even harder to get into the mindset of the new season.

Personally, I love this time of year as my attentions turn towards Autumn-Winter tailoring and receiving my brand new fabric bunches. At Holland and Sherry, one of my most favourite wool suppliers, we’ve just had the delivery. The delivery consists of our new A/W fabric bunches, all lined up beautifully and ready to be shown off and made into tailored garments. As ever, Holland and Sherry are forward thinking with their fabric designs including bold colour choices, heritage fabrics and luscious velvets – touching upon some of these seasons leading colours and trends.

To round up Autumn-Winter, I’ve listed my favourite looks and styles for the new season.

Return of the Heritage

In at number one is the reemergence of Heritage fabrics. These are an absolute joy to work with and make up into tailored garments beautifully. Dashing tweeds, interesting checks and coloured herringbones create the most stylish blazers, skirts, overcoats and winter suits – perfect for the cooler winter months.

To accompany such a fabric, one may consider using a luxury leather trim, one of this seasons biggest fabrics. Perhaps a brown leather collar on a tweed jacket to off set the khaki-brown tones or some fancy piping into the seams of your dress to add contrast and style to your chosen piece? If its a quality cut you are looking for, then leather supplier Alma is packed roof to rafta with suedes and leathers in just about every colour from brown to black, purple to orange and just about any other colour you may fancy. Whats more, you can pop in and select your own unique cut of leather bringing to life any garment or handbag to life.

COLOUR!

Going steady at number two is my absolute favourite this season, COLOUR! It is everywhere you look and both the catwalk and retailers alike are awash with cobalt blue, purples and plums giving us all an excuse to add a colour pop into our wardrobes throughout the winters months. In my opinion, colour energizes you, driving both confidence and individuality – something we all strive for when it comes to our day and evening wardrobe.

When it comes to choosing colour for your professional wardrobe, seek the advice of an honest friend or stylist as there are many different shades of ‘each’ colour and choosing the one that compliments your skin tone is important. My favourite ways to wear colour are ‘blocking’(see picture), choosing neutral accessories to match your chosen colour palette. Experiment with bold scarves, perhaps around your neck or tied around your handbag, with an equally bold pair of shoes  – I love this look with a classic tailored suit – perhaps in a navy or gunmetal grey.

Wardrobe must haves

Lastly,  some additions Ill be making to my own wardrobe this season. Firstly ‘The Cape’.A fabulous summer/autumn transitional piece, its warm enough for the early morning-late evening chill, not to mention a stylish and smart way of dressing from day to evening .

Vanessa chose a cut of cloth from Savile Row merchants Holland and Sherry to create her Cape suit. The cloth, which has a small dog tooth design, draped beautifully for our cape also lending itself well to her structured shift dress. Vanessa chose her signature ‘Azalea’ lining to finish the suit, providing a beautiful contrast against the black/white dogtooth design.

Another favourite wardrobe addition this season is the A-line skirt. If tailored at your correct waist point it looks great with a good pair of leather boots, white shirt and a super tailored jacket. Why not consider choosing a skirt with kick pleats, which work very well with structured tweeds or mixing wool blends together, choosing a tweed design and plain fabric for a modern finish.

Lastly, a touch of luxury(and why not?!) in the form of brocade and velvet. I love both and depending on the colour and style, can easily be worked into day and evening wear. A smart velvet jacket is an absolute must this Autumn and choosing a deep berry or vibrant purple will lend itself well for day time elegance and evening glamour Fancy Brocade?  Try a structured skirt or a short jacket in this glorious fabric, but remember, one piece at a time as certainly carries the wow factor.
