Prepare some answers to typical questions

It’s common knowledge that most employers will ask a similar array of initial questions at a job interview, which is great because it means you can prepare and anticipate some of the things you may be asked.

Before the interview, spend some time preparing answers to typical questions such as: Tell me about yourself? What’s your biggest weakness? & Why you?

Ask questions

Most people probably don’t realise that an interview is actually a two-way encounter. An interview isn’t just so an employer can assess whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for the role, but it’s also for you to decide whether or not the company is right for you too. This is why it’s important to ask questions. Start with asking the interviewer why do they like working here?

Panel interview?

If you’re being interviewed by more than one person don’t just engage with the obvious head of the interview. Engage with everyone involved and direct your answers to all in the room.

Make sure you smile and shake everybody’s hand, even the receptionists on the way into the building, first impressions count for everything at an interview so it’s important to make yours count.

Be yourself

Some of the best advice is often the simplest – remain calm and confident in your interview and always be yourself. Keep eye contact, nod your head when it’s appropriate to do so, and always be conscious that your body language is positive.

Research

Always make sure you have done sufficient company research before heading into your interview. This can be done from browsing the company’s website and social media channels. If you are aware of who will be interviewing you, and if it’s possible to do so, try and do some research on the interviewer too.

Closing

When closing an interview always thank the interviewer for their time and shake their hand. Ask them when you will next hear from them and always make sure to ask for feedback.
