Can you tell us about your journey as a purpose-driven entrepreneur? What inspired you to start your business?

My journey as a purpose-driven entrepreneur began with a profound realisation of the disparities and untapped potential in the areas I’m passionate about. Witnessing the challenges faced by my community ignited a spark, prompting me to establish a business that could be a catalyst for positive change. I wanted to change the narrative. Connect black professionals worldwide, break stereotypes, and just make a positive change. The Black Lives Matter movement and my own experiences pushed me to turn frustration into action. I wanted a platform and community where we leave our titles at the door, and everyone comes to help each other and grow together. That’s where BYP Network was born.

Kike Oniwinde AgoroWhat is the mission and core purpose of your business, and how does it drive your daily work and decision-making?

Our mission at BYP Network is pretty simple but impactful: change the black narrative by connecting and amplifying the voices of black professionals globally.

Our mission is deeply rooted in fostering change. It’s not just a mission statement; it’s the compass guiding our daily work and decision-making. Every action is driven by the desire to contribute meaningfully to causes that matter. Every decision, every strategy is crafted with the goal of revolutionising the hiring experience for Black professionals and building a community that resonates with purpose and empowerment.

How do you ensure that your business aligns with your personal values and the causes you’re passionate about?

Ensuring alignment between my business and personal values is non-negotiable. I’ve embedded these values into the DNA of the company, creating a symbiotic relationship that fuels our collective passion. From the suppliers we choose to the projects we undertake, every aspect is a reflection of our commitment to the causes that matter.

Can you share some specific examples of how your business has made a positive impact on your chosen cause or community?

Our business takes pride in tangible positive impacts. From dynamic online networking events to vibrant real-life engagements, BYP Network has become the go-to hub for black professionals. We’ve seen careers take off, mentorships flourish, and the community come together. Our previous crowdfunding triumph, raising over $1 million, isn’t just a testament to our impact – it’s a rallying cry from a community that believes in the positive change we’re bringing to the table.

What challenges have you faced in balancing profitability with purpose in your business, and how have you overcome them?

Balancing profitability with purpose hasn’t been without its challenges. Navigating this delicate equilibrium requires constant innovation and strategic thinking but over the years we’ve proved that purpose-driven initiatives can thrive economically.

Many purpose-led businesses face skepticism regarding the sincerity of their commitment to social or environmental causes. How do you address this skepticism and demonstrate authenticity?

Transparency is key, and we actively communicate our actions, milestones, and challenges. Demonstrating authenticity involves being open about our journey, the lessons learned, and the continuous efforts to do better. Actions speak louder than words. Engaging with the community, sharing success stories, and forming diverse partnerships with those who share our values – these are the threads of authenticity woven into the fabric of BYP Network.

Can you share a story or project that you’re particularly proud of that showcases the positive change your business has brought about?

Our previous crowdfunding was a game-changer, but more recently partnering with one the US’s largest tech events, Afrotech stands out as a proud moment. It signified a meaningful connection with a prominent platform that shares our vision and acknowledged the impact we’ve made in the tech and diversity space not just here in London but globally too. Also, launching Javelin was a strategic evolution in our business model, showcasing our adaptability and commitment to innovation. Javelin not only streamlines our offerings but also adds tangible value to our clients and community. It’s a testament to our dedication to providing accessible and impactful solutions in the DEI hiring space.

How do you stay motivated and maintain your passion for both your business and the causes you support, especially during challenging times?

Staying motivated during challenging times is fueled by a deep-rooted belief in the impact we’re making. Connecting with the community, celebrating small victories, and fostering a resilient team spirit all contribute to maintaining passion for both the business and our mission.

What advice do you have for aspiring female entrepreneurs who want to create a business with a strong social or environmental purpose?

For aspiring female entrepreneurs, my advice is to embrace your unique perspective and strengths. Be unwavering in your commitment to a purpose-driven business. Seek mentors, build a supportive network, and remember that your journey is part of a larger movement toward positive change.

How do you envision the future of your purpose-led business, and what impact do you hope to achieve in the coming years?

At BYP Network, our mission is to foster an inclusive and equitable future for Black professionals by redefining the concept of success and the hiring space as a whole. We believe in bridging the diversity gap by nurturing talent through comprehensive assistance and actively collaborating to dismantle systemic barriers. To address these critical challenges, we developed Javelin, a platform that enables us to work alongside valuable partners worldwide. Our dedicated platform connects hiring teams to diverse talent and empowers us to further our mission of cultivating a more inclusive work environment for Black professionals on a global scale.
