2016 Women of the Year Lunch Winners

Prime Minister Theresa May tallking on a podium at Women of the Year Lunch Awards
Theresa May presented the Women of the Year Special Award to Margaret Aspinall on behalf of the Hillsborough Families.

The Women of the Year Lunch & Awards, held yesterday at the InterContinental London Park Lane, honored six inspirational women in a variety of categories including Courage, Campaigning, contribution to education, Lifetime Achievement and Inspirational Woman of the year.

High-profile women such as Nadiya Hussain, Judy Murray and Sheila Hancock attended the lunch, and the awards were judged by an esteemed panel, including Maureen Lipman CBE, and President of Women of the Year Lunch, Sandi Toksvig CBE.

Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, accepted the special award from Prime Minister Theresa May. Aspinall represented all of the women who fought for justice for victims of the crush that was responsible for 96 deaths in 1989, including Aspinall’s 18 year-old son James.

After a long battle, an inquest this April revealed that it wasn’t the football fans that were responsible for deaths at Hillsborough on the 15th April, 1989.

Presenter of the award, Theresa May said: Theresa May and Margaret Aspinall Women of the Year Lunch and Awards hugging

‘It was an honor to present “The Women of the Year Special Award” to the Hillsborough families today.  Having lost their loved ones in the most appalling circumstances, they then spent 27 years searching for the truth with extraordinary dignity.’

‘This April, when the fresh inquests delivered their conclusions, they made clear to the whole nation what the Hillsborough families have known to be true from the beginning – that the fans were blameless.’

‘Thanks to their resolve we now know the truth about what happened that day.  This award is for all those who lost their lives at Hillsborough and their families who have shown immense courage and determination.’
