WeAreTheCity awards recipients recognised in King’s Honours  

The King’s New Year Honours List 2023 recognises the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom.  

More than 1,200 recipients have been awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a focus on those who have given with generosity to others in need. 

Individuals have been recognised for being dedicated community champions, role models in sports, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people. 

This year we were delighted to see three of WeAreTheCity’s award winners and those featured on our Pioneer20 and Thrive20 listing featured as part of this year’s King’s Honours.   

 A huge congratulations to the following. 

Alice Hendy who receives her MBE for services to online safety (Rising Star and TechWomen100 winner) 

Alice is CEO of the multi-award-winning R;pple Suicide Prevention charity, founded following the suicide of her 21-year-old brother Josh in November 2020. 

Josh had been researching techniques to take his own life via harmful internet searches. Horrified by how easily such information could be accessed, Alice decided to use her experience in designing and implementing successful cyber awareness and education programmes, to ensure more help and support is given to individuals searching for harmful content online. 

R;pple is an online interceptive tool designed to interrupt and support individuals who are conducting searches relating to self-harm or suicide. 

Alice is a much sought-after speaker in the world of suicide prevention, which she undertakes alongside her full-time role as Cyber Culture Manager with the financial services firm, Deloitte. She has built partnerships and working relationships across the cyber industry with the Metropolitan Police, FBI, Microsoft, Deloitte, GCHQ, NCSC, PwC, KPMG, Hong Kong Police Department and many other influential organisations. 

Shalom Lloyd who receives her MBE for services to International Trade and Women in Business (Thrive20 listee) 

Shalom Lloyd (BSc MSc Pharm; MBA) is a proud mother of five, a wife, a serial entrepreneur and TEDx speaker  

A global leader for over twenty (20) years in the UK Pharmaceutical (drug development) Industry, Shalom Lloyd is the founder of Naturally Tribal Skincare a company that uses Mother Nature’s gifts to create natural chemical-free skincare products in the United Kingdom with ingredients ethically sourced from Nigeria. Shalom is also the Chief Strategy Officer at Emerging Markets Quality Trials (eMQT), a non-profit organisation focused on providing the global pharmaceutical industry access to patients in Africa. 

Shalom is a Commonwealth Export Champion, a Mentor, a STEM Ambassador and a strong believer in the fact that anything is possible! 

Taban Shoresh who receives her OBE for services to Refugees and displaced conflict survivors in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (Pioneer20) 

Former child genocide survivor Taban Shoresh is founder and CEO of the Lotus Flower, which supports conflict survivors in Kurdistan, northern Iraq. The Lotus Flower has just received its charity status. 

To date, the charity has reached more than 60,000 vulnerable women, girls, and community members at its centres through educational classes, livelihoods and skills training, mental health support, awareness of women’s rights and gender-based violence, plus peacebuilding and human rights activities. 

Taban’s family were one of many Kurdish families persecuted by Saddam Hussein’s regime. 

Taban is heavily involved in refugee-led initiatives on the international stage through the Global Refugee Forum, and she is a member of Girls Not Brides, the Action Network for Forced Displacement and ICVA MENA Women Leadership Network. Taban is also an Ambassador for One Young World and has spoken at various global summits in this capacity. Taban Shoresh (born 1983) is a British aid worker, women’s rights activist, and founder of non-profit organisation: The Lotus Flower. She is also a Kurdish (Anfal) genocide survivor. Due to her father’s involvement with the Peshmerga (Kurdish Military) and prominence in Kurdish Literature.
